Nothing says welcome home more to passengers on one of the many daily ferries to England than catching sight of the huge expanse of chalky whiteness as you cross the 22 miles from France.

Thousands of day trippers make the journey between Dover and France every month and its something that you should defiantly plan if you are visiting the South Coast of England. Dover itself is only an hour of so outside London and up to 20 crossings a day over to France and back you have no real excuse not to pop over for the day or longer.

Currently there are five different carriers offering crossings on the Dover Ferry so with this competition prices are kept low, keep your eyes out for special offers where often foot passengers travel for free. The journey only takes about 90 minutes so if you want to wander over and have a lazy authentic French lunch and be back in time to meet some friends for in Dover later the same day it’s very possible.

Dover itself dates back thousands of years and has much to see. Its role as a strategic port goes back to the Roman era and like most port towns is a fantastic place to explore.

Whatever your personal passions, England will have something, somewhere on offer to excite and inspire, the secret is finding the hidden gems of this interesting and intriguing nation.

While different travellers have different tastes and everyone is looking for something a little bit different from a break, the suggestions below represent just a few of the hidden treasures to be uncovered on a holiday in England – because of the placement of a number of the sites suggested, visitors may wish to consider contacting one of the many companies offering car hire England has to offer

Whitstable

If you are searching for a seaside destination that really exemplifies England, there can be no better place that Whistable on the north Kent Coast. Popular with locals and Londoners, Whitstable is a great alternative to the bright lights of Brighton and offers something a little more authentic to the holidaymaker in search of salty sea air and a little bit of diverting downtime distraction. Head for the pebble beach beloved of actor Peter Cushing and set up camp between the “groynes” or breakwaters, enjoy an al fresco pint at the Old Neptune Pub or check out one of the performances or exhibitions hosted nightly by the local venues or the town’s exciting Horsebridge Arts Centre.

Kelvedon Nuclear Bunker

Want to spend a day seeing something you have never seen before? Then head for the Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker in Essex. Built as a retreat in case of nuclear attack, the bunker was once the bolthole intended to house the Prime Minister and top officials in the event of a nuclear attack. Since the en of the cold war the bunker has been decommissioned and is now run as a private museum allowing an exciting insight into this hitherto unseen world.

Jurassic Coast

If you want to get close to nature and explore our origins at the same time, then head to the Jurassic Coast in the South of England. This world heritage site boasts some stunning beaches, which make a great spot for a family day out as well as being perfect for fossil hunting.

Long Man of Wilmington

Cut into a chalky hillside on the South Downs, the Long Man of Wilmington is a stunning sight that is guaranteed to inspire and excite. The baffling depiction is a great spot for a walk or a picnic in good weather and, with its rich history makes a brilliant jumping off point for a school holiday education opportunity - it was painted green to disguise it and prevent its use for navigational purposes during the second world war and local legend has it that the Victorians may have modified his anatomy to make it more acceptable to civilised society.

Avebury

While most visitors to England know all about Stonehenge, less people make the journey to Avebury. This World Heritage Site is the home of the largest stone circle in the world. This Megalithic monument makes a great day out for all the family, with the nearby manor and garden offering their own attraction as well.

When you think of British locations for great shopping you will almost certainly be drawn to London. The capital city of England and a thriving metropolis, London has an immense number of shopping experiences for you to indulge in. However, there are a number of other fantastic shopping cities in England, and if you want to have an alternative to shopping online for Miss Selfridge discounts and similar deals, there is ample opportunity to enjoy British high streets.

One of the best places to shop in England is of course London. Here you’ll find an extraordinary range of shopping opportunities whether you’re looking for high-end premium brands or a mix of affordable clothing. Some of the most famous shops in the world have premises here, and you can indulge in British institutions such as Harrods, Savile Row and Fortnum & Mason by heading towards Knightsbridge. Meanwhile, Oxford Street, between Marble Arch and Oxford Circus, has an incredible range of shops to explore. Here you’ll find department stores including BHS, John Lewis and Debenhams alongside fashion outlets such as Zara, Next and Primark. This allows you the luxury of being able to shop for a range of affordable goods all in one place. And with London also hosting two Westfield Centres, one in Shepherds Bush and the other in Stratford, you’ll be able to find everything you’ll ever need all under one roof.

Outside of London there are plenty of shopping opportunities too though, and in the north of England you’ll find several city’s ideal for retail therapy. Birmingham is very readily accessible and with its own international airport can be just as good for shopping and travel as London. Whilst London’s Stratford Westfield’s has stolen the accolade of being Europe’s largest mall, The Bullring in Birmingham is one of the largest city centre retail spaces in Europe. More than 700 stores can be found here in the UK’s second largest city. And with the addition of colourful side streets filled with further shopping outlets, there’s more than enough to keep you occupied.

Manchester meanwhile is also a great place for shopping, and if you’re travelling to the city centre you can take the opportunity to ride the city’s iconic tram system. The famed Trafford Centre is the ideal place for all your shopping needs and, like many malls, you’ll be able to find a wide collection of brands under one roof. And with Southport and Liverpool also offering large multicultural cities with great shopping possibilities, there are plenty of spaces outside of London to shop.

Any shopping excursion in England is likely to find you plenty of places where you can find a multitude of brands. Lakeside and Bluewater locations outside of London are ideal if you don’t want to shop within a city itself and instead prefer to visit a retail location specific to your needs. But, with so many great cities across England offering you collections of premium brands and affordable products to buy, you’ll be able to shop to your hearts delight.

London is a very beautiful country to enjoy vacations. It’s most of the flights land and takes off from Heathrow Airport. Its smooth roads make one to have an ideal driving at any time of the day. That’s why Heathrow has always been a crowded airport and so one should book his/her radio cab on the airport before time. Else the person needs to walk on the streets to reach the destination. But before the person book the car he should see the car is suitable for his luggage and for him too as price matters! As the person needs to book the car early so needs to pay an extra amount of money as other people on air port without booking get a cab.

There are plenty of car hiring companies once you exit the baggage door and standing in the middle of the airport. On a cornet you will see a small office made for rental car services. These companies are selling their product/service from airport as they think they can get more customers from airports than they could get from building an office on some corner of the street. Some of the Car rental Heathrow Airport companies are named as Avis, Europcar, Alamo and Hertz.

Car hiring can be done from Birmingham Airport as well from Black pool Airport. Car rental can also be done by Glasgow Prestwick Airport and New Castle Airport. These stations have car hiring information on different websites and it has all the information that how we can get through car hiring process. But what happens when you become tired of the Tate or bored of the British Museum. Well New York would be nice , The Guggenheim Great but Florence would be Fab…

Florence has just about the most quality pieces of art in any one city anywhere in the world and of course it’s less than a three hour hop across Europe for us Brits. With flights every day from many regional airports now is about the best time to pack a bag, book a hotel ( or better still rent one of the many quality apartments in Florence ) and spend a few days looking at undoubtedly the most fantastic city in the world.

In its day the city of Florence has seen just about everybody from Di Vinci to Botticelli, and Galileo to Gucci. The masterpieces on walls across the many quality galleries are too numerous to mention and the shear quality of quality sculptures means your days will b filled and your feet sore.

Art aside The buzz and vibrancy of the city is so different form anything we have in England and the food ( and cakes ) will just blow you away. One of the downsides of getting spoilt will all that quality Tuscan diet is that you will never look at a Tesco frozen Lasagne or Pizza the same way ever again..

Flights to Florence start at about £40 per person plus tax. Hotels are from €50 a night and quality meal from €20 a head. Beer and wine starts at about €2 a glass..

In these days of post recession penny pinching it is important to add up all the costs when looking to book a holiday to the sun. Too many people just focus on the brochure price and not the bigger picture when looking at holidays.

With airlines charging for bags , food and checking in the prices are starting to rise and rise. Some of the travel companies like Ryan Air and BMI are now also adding on huge credit card supplements which take the cost even higher. I have seen that unless you have one particular payment card you can be forced to paying £5 per passenger credit card booking charge each way !! This adds up to a mighty £40 for a family of four travelling to Spain.

Other cost people fail to add on are things like travel insurance, kennelling for pets and car parking at the airport whilst you are away. If you hunt around you can save money when Parking Luton Airport for example has about 15 different parking options including many excellent drop off services and well as specialised disable areas. Prices range from the very reasonable to the down right rip off. The final thing you should look at is your spending money , rates do change from place to place and your bank might not be the best option. Often the airport is the worst deal so the best way is to look in advance at price comparison websites.

Don’t forget every pound you save is another pound you can take with you on your holiday and whether that’s an ice cream for the kids or a cold glass a beer the savings will make its taste just that little better.

Is there anything better than getting your mates around to have a night of games or movies, fun and snacks? It’s a way of relaxing, releasing tension, re-establishing friendships and making you feel good about life again. But what makes a great night in?

The first and most important things are friends. Kind of obvious really but a group of friends who will relax, let themselves go and enjoy the night will give you the perfect start to the perfect evening.

Send an invitation, either by e-mail, text or call. Something that sets the tone for what the night, for example playing cards for a poker night or a movie inspired invitation for a DVD or Blu-Ray party.

As a good host you will be keen to ensure that your guests are well fed and watered. You might decide to cook yourself or make it easy by picking up the phone to Dominos. Remember the Dominos Discount vouchers that will help to keep the cost of your party down. This is a good lesson in frugality and recycling, just remember to keep any of the Dominos discount codes that you may receive through your letterbox. But you can always check the Internet on the night if you forget. Pizza is not the only thing to keep your mates munching, nuts, crisps and sweets will always go down well. If it’s a movie night you might want to have a tonne of popcorn. Some beers or wine can help everyone feel relaxed but you probably don’t want too much.

If you are having a movie night, choose a theme. It could be a style of movie, a certain actor or maybe a specific movie franchise. Maybe invite your mates to come in costume, which should certainly get them talking. If you have a projector or a large screen TV, it will help you to get that cinema feel.

A games night can be as energetic or quiet as you want. A board game night will give plenty of opportunity for conversation and jokes. Games like Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary are entertaining and exercise the brain cells a little. If a cards game is the game of choice, keep gambling stakes low or use play money to make sure the atmosphere stays relaxed. Poker is currently in vogue and a set of poker chips can add that authentic feel to the atmosphere, it looks pretty cool too.

Modern games consoles are no longer just about sitting pressing buttons. A video games night can now be an active and hysterical evening for even the most ill co-ordinated of your buddies. Dance games are particularly good for getting people to lose their inhibitions and work off some of that pizza. You may prefer to showcase your friends singing abilities or let them live out their rock star fantasies with a band game. Virtual sports are always a big draw, whether it be tennis, boxing or golf. There us a huge variety to choose from.

The joy of a night in is the opportunity to leave real life at the door, relax and enjoy being a kid again. Why not give it a go? You won’t regret it.

News reports from The BBC and Broadband Genie state that the Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced that “almost” every community across the United Kingdom will have super-fast broadband by 2015.

The plans announces go on to say that it’s the private sector that will deliver broadband to two thirds of the UK with the balance (mainly rural areas) getting public funds to build a “digital hub” with a new super fast fibre optic internet network. The aim is to provide Europe’s best country wide Broadband Service.

Speaking on the Today television programme he went onto say that its about creating jobs and catalysing private sector investment. The UK government has promised up to £830m for the scheme and has initially promised 2 megabits per second broadband within two years with an eventual aim to offer everybody superfast speeds of 24Mbps by 2015.

He went on to say that “Our goal today is very simple: to deliver a fibre point in every community in the UK by the end of this parliament”

Many others broadband insiders have looked at this proposal and consider a fixed line broad band connection as old hat and have recommended that the government consider providing a nationwide Wi-Fi service accessed either freely or with paid for dongles. Current mobile broadband connection speeds are over 7 MBS and mobile network providers such and Vodafone have already muted that they foresee 24mbs plus with a cellular connection far sooner than 2015 and at far less a cost to the UK taxpayer.

The government it seems are determined to spend their way out of recession, time will tell if that’s the right decision.
